The 4% rule, based on the Trinity Study, suggests that retirees can safely withdraw 4% of their portfolio in the first year of retirement, then adjust for inflation annually, with a high probability the money lasts 30 years. It's a guideline — not a guarantee — and may need adjusting based on market conditions and personal circumstances.

A common target is 25× your expected annual expenses (the inverse of the 4% rule). If you expect to spend $50,000 per year in retirement, you'd need approximately $1.25M. This calculator shows your projected nest egg — compare it to your expected annual spending multiplied by 25 to see if you're on track.

Conservative: 5–6% for a balanced (60/40) portfolio. Moderate: 7% for a stock-heavy portfolio. Aggressive: 8–10% for an all-equity portfolio. We default to 7%, a widely used moderate assumption. Always model multiple scenarios — try 5%, 7%, and 9% to see a range of outcomes.
